Sarah is depressed.

I’m part of a creative advertising team for a small agency. We’ve been working from home for months. I’ve just learned this is going to be my permanent workplace environment. Before the pandemic, I felt that my talents were getting noticed at work and that my dream of one day opening my own boutique agency would happen. Now I am filled with sadness and feel uncertain of my future. I’m no good at working online; it takes away the creativity, energy and kicks I get from working face to face. I live by myself, am not in a relationship, and I can’t discuss this with my workmates. I’ve never felt this alone.

Sarah needs an OT.

ANXIETY, DEPRESSION AND STRESS are three conditions that can come from many sources, be triggered by a crisis, and have unfortunate outcomes.

The occupational therapist helped Sarah to:

  • Talk through and establish a list of activities that she needs and wants to do every day. Help Sarah organize her schedule to include participation in those activities that bring her a sense of purpose and joy such as listening to podcasts, doing yoga and participating in online games like scrabble. Set an achievable short-term goal or two that will give her a related sense of progress and success.

  • Identify and connect with the available resources and social supports in her life. Online networking opportunities, entrepreneurial meetups or Facebook groups. Develop Sarah’s social connections, with colleagues from work or school friends, to decrease her sense of isolation.

  • Map out a routine. Either reconnect with what worked in the past or develop something new that might feel like a new normal. Broaden this to include Sarah’s family where needed. Set up Sarah’s physical environment to better support her routine. Use a reminder system and ensure both an organized work environment and proper ergonomic positioning at her workstation.

  • Learn about depression. Practice healthy coping strategies and skills. Grounding and breathing exercises, positive thinking, establishing a good sleep environment and participation in physical activities.

  • Highlight personal progress and celebrate milestones, all while working towards a long-term goal.

Because of occupational therapy, I have regained my confidence.
